A Mexican pantry staple loaded with bright, almost citrus-like, earthy flavor.

A delicious and essential part of the Mexican pantry. Similar to European Oregano, but less sweet and with a slight citrus twist. There are many plants known as "oregano" in Mexico but this is the most common (Lippia graveolens).

A tip from a good cook in the Yucatan tells us that Mexican Oregano really shines when it's been toasted for a moment or two on a hot, dry skillet.

Use in sauces, in salsas, sauces on simple grilled meat or anywhere authentic, savory flavor is needed.

Dried Mexican oregano is one of the traditional tableside additions to posole. It's fun to take a large pinch and hold it high over the bowl and rub it, cascading down and scenting the dining room.

"Rancho Gordo delivers the cream of the crop."

My favorite oregano

Like another reviewer, this is my favorite dried oregano. Other dried oreganos, including the Indio oregano, taste slightly moldy to me - this is across the board - not from a single purchase or place. But THIS Mexican oregano I LOVE!

Hooked on RG Mexican Oregano

This is by far the finest oregano available. We can’t use any other oregano now. I’m always backstocked at least two jars, as I live in fear that you might be out when I order. I know the jars are expensive packaging, but it keeps the oregano fresh. Thank you.

Excellent!

Not normally a fan of dried herbs when one can get fresh, however, a jar came in the bean club order and with fresh herbs near impossible to get in the middle of a pandemic, I gave this a try.

And totally regretted not getting them before!

Will cheerfully buy again and again... so worth it.

Larger quantities please!

This is a wonderful oregano, but I would like to buy it in a larger quantity, perhaps in a packet instead of the small jar.

Amazing flavor, good on many things

I love this spice. I've been putting it on everything. Like no oregano flavor I've ever had. Totally distinctive, yet also mild and easy.

The Rancho Gordo Story

You Can Blame it All on the Dutch

I was shopping one August for tomatoes and, despite Napa being one of the world's most magnificent agricultural regions, all the tomatoes were from a hothouse in Holland! Worse, they were hard and pale pink instead of the ripe tomatoes I was craving. I started to grow my own tomatoes and this eventually led to beans.

My first harvested heirloom bean was Rio Zape. They were pretty and easy to grow but I had no idea what to expect when I cooked them. They were similar to the pintos I liked but there was so much more going on. Hints of chocolate and coffee mixed with an earthy texture made my head spin. I was blown away by Rio Zape and the other heirloom beans I was growing, but also really confused why they were such a big secret. I took the beans to the farmers market, organizing things on my kitchen table. Soon there was a warehouse, followed by more markets and mail order. It seems we had struck a nerve. People agreed that heirloom beans were worth saving, growing and cooking. Currently our warehouse, a retail shop, and offices are in Napa, California, and a stop here is part of many tours of the wine country.

All of my agricultural pursuits have been based on being someone who likes to cook but gets frustrated by the lack of ingredients, especially those that are native to the Americas. One of the things that originally drew me to beans was the fact that they are indigenous to the Americas. It seems to me these indigenous ingredients should be familiar, if not common. American cuisine is re-inventing itself and I'd love to include ingredients, traditions and recipes from north and south of the border as part of the equation. I love the concept of The Americas. I feel as if it's just as important as the European heritage many of us share.
